In memory of Evangelos Paraskevaides 1957-2026
Evangelos developed a passion for evidence based cervical screening and colposcopy as a clinical research fellow at Aberdeen Infirmary in the late 1980’s. During that time he participated in several important studies around the aetiology of treatment failures after treatment of cervical pre-invasive disease and the long term sequalae. He also became aware of the reproductive consequences of treatment during his research fellow attachment in the UK. This early exposure to clinical research in our speciality kindled a life long passion developing the evidence base for best practice.
He initially trained as medical student in Thessaloniki and then became a clinical academic at the University of Ioannina, eventually becoming a full professor. He had the foresight to develop a comprehensive database of all his colposcopy patients so that he could develop his personal insight into treatment and its oncological / reproductive morbidity. He developed the concept of ‘personalised’ medicine in colposcopy practice before the term became fashionable.
He mentored a huge number of clinical research fellows over the last thirty years, all of which successfully presented at BSCCP meetings, and published papers that have influenced British and International colposcopy practice. Evangelos saw the importance of international collaboration whether it was through the EFC, IFPC or the BSCCP. He was an avid supporter of the BSCCP as he started his colposcopy journey in the UK. He was awarded the founders medal in 2022 for his significant contribution to colposcopy and international practice.
We send our condolences to his wife Mara Kyrgiou, his two daughters and two sons.
Evangelos Paraskevaidis’s legacy will be his huge contribution to the art of colposcopy and treatment of cervical pre-cancer. He has inspired several generations of young colposcopists to practice individualised care in the UK and beyond. In Greece, he developed the Hellenic Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology and introduced a robust quality assurance programme for training colposcopists. His significant local influence has improved patient centred care in Greece.
